Aloha, here are some pictures Jim sent me of his day off-shore in Kona. I had to miss because of a soccer game, but at least my team won. The mahi Jim has is actually another species. It is pompano, but we call them machete mahi. They are very good eating.

Hi Don,..... Great photo's!!! The Machete Mahi looks a lot like a Mahi Mahi tho not as colorful. 8) 8)

Too bad you missed the tourney but it looks like your team did OK. The Maui Jim tournament is shown on cable TV over here.... 8) I've watched it several times. I kinda like the teams that have the Bikini clad babes on 'em....

I'm looking forward to gettin' into some Skipjack/Yellowfin in Baja soon. 8) 8)

Hey Mem,

Is this the Maui Jim as in sun glass fame? or is this a "Jim" who lives on Maui?

In either case your "machete pompano" I think is just a young female mahi-mahi. In the gulf and the keys they call them "chicken dolphin" and can sometimes be found in huge schools under debris.

Boy, yummmmm, they all taste great with a little soy and wasabi.

Aren't computors wonderful?

I just looked up dolphin-mahi/mahi-dorado and discovered there are two kinds of mahi. One being the common dolphin fish Coryphaena Hippurus and the other being C.equisetis. The second one commonly known as pompano dolphin and in juveniles showing some barring on it's sides as does this one pictured.
Common dolphin fish C.Hippurus do grow a bit larger and range closer to shore than the "machete" dolphin.

I bet on the grill they're indistinguishable. :P

Aloha guys, Jim is just a jim from maui, not the Maui Jim of the sunglasses fame. He is a grad student at U of Wash and loves to fly fish over there. He had a blast in Kona. Tony, see I was right. The machete mahi are different and great fun on a 6wt. They only get to about 5 lbs, and are actually better eating that the regular mahi, that are of course so good the hawaiians named them twice.

That is a regular mahi-mahi I got on the fly with a Rainy's popper. They are both fun on the fly cause we like anything that jumps, and boy do they jump. Darian good luck down in baja, catch a big rooster like Jay did. Take care, I hope to get off-shore this weekend if the swells calm down. Mems.

Hey guys,

Thanks Don for posting those photos... now that I'm back in Seattle, I look at those shots almost daily, trying to remember the sun!

We had such a great time down there (that trip was essentially my bachelor party), the little pompano dolphin was a treat to get, my first one. He hit a pink crease fly right as we went by the buoy; the surface take and subsequent aerial show was fantastic.

And sorry, I have no affiliation w/ the cool sunglasses, but I grew up on Maui and thought the moniker would be fitting... :D
