I agree with Bill That the new Orvis Mid-Arbor reels are a great value, I have two, a #II that I use on my 4 & 5 wts and a #III that I use on my 6 & 7 wts. Great disc drag, really nice aesthetics, workmanship. They seem to be selling well because a lot of my friends in my local FF club also have them.

The only thing missing from this line-up is a #1 which would be great for 2 & 3 wts. I mentioned this to the Orvis rep at the San Mateo ISE show and he said he would look into expanding this line.

If you also would like to see a #1 Battenkill Mid-arbor reel added to the line up, stop by the Orvis booth at the Sacto ISE and talk to Stan. Orvis has small reels but not as nice as the mid-arbor. I mentioned to Stan that I already owned other sizes and was looking to complete my collection, he seemed pleased to hear of the interest.

Hope you get to the show.

Bill,
Do you have any idea who really manufacturers that new reel?

I've seen this exact reel made in several variations of machining in several different brands. Redington, Pfleuger, this new Orvis, and I think Cabelas are all the same reel and I'm sure there are a few more.

The quality is good for a medium priced reel but it just gets me that there are so many brands out there selling the same thing under different names.

Actually the new Redington CD fly reel is built on the same platform but has a cork disc drag and a Japanese Koyo stainless steel one way needle bearing. These reels are fully machined out of 6061 T6 aerospace alloy and hard anodized too.

This makes it the best of all of them especially in the larger sizes for heavy freshwater and light saltwater use.
