Rob,
A question for you. What scanner are you using? Is it a flat bed or a slide scanner. I've been scanning slides and negatives for quite a few years and now thinking about doing it on the side. What the photo places charge per scan is pretty high but I guess that's why they have a businesss.
How much Photo shop are you doing after the fact

We just got a Epson Stylus cx7800 printer Scanner ,copier. 150.00 after 30.00 rebate. Its does a ok job on the slides. Some of the sunset photos I do sharpen and darken a little with Paint shop pro. to match the slides.
