Hey Striper,
Pheasant tail nymphs are pretty good flies to start with. They're easy to tie, they catch fish, and there are quite a few other patterns that are tied in roughly the same way. All you need is some pheasant tail, fine copper wire, and peacock hearl. It's easier to start tying them in a bigger size, say on a #12 hook, then work your way down to #18. Once you get the hang of it, you can add a bead head and some flashabou for the wing case. The #18 bead-head flashback pheasant tail is a trout killer!
Good luck.

Hey Tayler,.... Congrats on your gift.... :) You're gonna enjoy the trip. :)

You haven't said what you intend to fish for or what types of flies you favor. :? These a couple of questions that you should answer before beginning.... 8) No use trying to tie flies that you have no intention of using until you get "hooked" on this addiction.... :?

First, the jaws of a standard Regal vice are not easily used to tie very small patterns.... :? Try tying larger patterns first. 8)

If you haven't acquired any fly tying books, yet, you may wish to look into checking out the library for whatever's available and then making a decision about what to buy for beginning a collection..... 8) 8)

If books are not your "cup of tea", try a bunch of on-line sites for pattern descriptions, photos, histories, etc.... Make note (bookmark) of those sites for return later. 8)

There're so many categories/types of flies that researching is half the fun.... 8) 8)

Happy hunting.... :D :D :D

Taylor, what should you tie? Why, a red and white Tap's Bug, of course. Size 2 hook, red and white deer fur (belly or body fur), and white bucktail for the tail. This fly will familiarize you with spinning and stacking deer hair, which is useful for tying Dahlberg Divers, Muddler Minnows, certain grasshopper/cricket patterns, etc. Also, it is my go-to fly for topwater bass bugging:

Taylor...Wooly buggers! Black, brown and olive. Tie in a few strands of blue smolt flash in the tail. A secret weapon fly :paranoid: Fox Poopah! Shhhhhhhh....don't let anyone know you have these in your fly box! SullyTM

P.S. Red/White Tap Bug :!:
