aloha I was reading David's post about fishing baja, and someone wanted pictures of warm places. This is Honolii river mouth. It is apopular surf spot, and on of my favorite spots to fish on the Hilo side.

Hey Mem,

I love that little inside break in the first photo. I've been thinking about taking the family and grand daughter to the islands next year. The last time I was there was in '62. I still remember some of the early years and I would hate to erase those visions. I KNOW it has changed - big time.
My friend goes back home to Maui at least 4 times a year. He's just about ready to move back home.

Great island shots

beautiful pics Don! Looks like some tight backcasting.

I will be back in Maui in March. I think I'm gonna bring some fly stuff. I'll pick your brain a little as time gets closer.

Aloha, thanks for the positive comments. Yeah Jay things have changed, but Hilo is still small town and very enjoyable. Jbird, yeah it is a tight back cast. It was high tide, and I was in close to the trees. I use a low curve cast and stay below the branches. There is a river current that mixes with the ocean swell and creates a little current break that the fish come into feed in. I just high stick a crazy charlie in the pools and wham I catch fish right at my feet. I also cast a clouser out and strip it back in the current. When the surf is big, then I hit the waves. I have been surfing down there for 20 years, but just started fishing there last summer. Unreal you just never know where the fish are until you try. Mems.
