Attention surface trout enthusiasts:

I have observed some outrageous Baetis hatches while working on the Lower Sacramento in and around Redding during the inclement weather of the past two weeks. True to the lazy form of these trout, there are a lot more bugs than rising fish, but persistant searching will reveal some really nice fish working the slicks. The bugs are small, probably a #20.

In addition to the bugs, the Fall-Run Chinook were really late this year, and you can still find some nice groups of active spawners, especially
in the upper river. The present spawing activity should blend right into the Late-Fall Chinook egg bite, which generally peaks mid December to mid January.

This is arguably the best time to go to the Sac. The flows are low, there are lots of cool birds to look at like Buffleheads and eagles, and 85% of the guides are over on the Trinity. See you on the river, Matt.

You might find those Blue Wing Olive mayflies on any valley river this time of year.

Foggy overcast days are best.

A size 18 Adams Paradun on 6x will usually get them.

Some years ago I read a magazine article about catching Searun Cutthroats in Oregon coastal rivers in the winter on Baetis mayfly hatches.

You might check the lower American River too.
