Aloha, we have a specialized type of fishing here in Hawaii. It is called akule, big eyed scad, fishing and we do it at night. Last night I went out to Hilo bay with some good friends. We dropped anchor in 60 feet of water and waited for the lights to work and bring in the akule school.
At first we caught some grouper and snapper and some papio, my favorite. Then the first of the akule showed up, but were on the bottom.
We fished and ate musubis and miso peanuts and enjoyed a beatiful evening on the water. The breeze was slight and the shooting stars were worth wishing on. I was wishing the school would come to the surface. That is when the actions gets hot.
We filled the cooler with akule and various other species and were going to head in about midnight when the bite turned on. The school was 30 feet right under the boat and we were reeling them in as fast as we could drop another bait. The akule are good fighters on light spin gear.
Our batteries started to fade and then it happened in the diminishing light the school came to the surface. I could hear the splashes in the dark and knew it was time to get out the 8wt. I experimented with various flies until I found that the akule were after minnows. I tried clousers, and decievers, but no takers. Finally I decided to try a rainbow trout epoxy smolt and wham I was hooked up. I caught a dozen or so on the fy and the 1-2lb akule were good fun and plenty of action. Something big was lurking and chased one of the akule I had on. It bit an opelu in half that my firend had hooked. They think it was a shark, but I thought I saw an ulua cruising with the school. Anyway were never caugth it, what ever it was.
All in all it was a very productive night. We got over 200 fish, and had a blast. If you ever come to Hawaii try akule fishing at night, and don't forget your fly rod. Mems.
