Kiene's Fly Shop has spent the last 20 years fishing the Caribbean Coast of the Mexican Yucatan and Belize with groups of our customers. We have been to all the major fly fishing lodges plus fished out of small remote fishing village and from tiny cays with cottages.

After all this time we have found that the last untouched area is actually the top of the Mexican Yucatan, northwest to due west of Cancun.

The north coast and west coast of the Mexican Yucatan is virtually unknown by most American fly fishers. We have partnered with a group of people in Cancun who have two locations, Tarpon Cay Lodge and Campeche Tarpon Club, that are new and pristine with schools of Baby or Mangrove Tarpon on clear open flats, secluded lagoons, up small creeks and jungle rivers.

This is mostly sight fishing in very shallow clear water with an 8/9 weight rod and a floating fly line. The Tarpon run 5 to 35 pounds and on occasion bigger. This area is famous for Snook as well.

To give an idea of how good it is we have had several clients (Guy Deaner, Jim Palumbo and Tim Ackerman)) boat as many as 15 Tarpon in one day. This is boated, not just jumped. Now these are seasoned fly fishers who have been on many of our salt water trips and also fish locally for Stripers from boats with #8/9 weight outfits.

We can't guaranty that you will do this well because it is related to your casting/fishing skill. We can guaranty that you will see hundreds of Tarpon daily.

May through August is prime time. We spend a lot of time checking with the tides and moon phase to pick the best weeks. You can fish here almost 12 months of the year but the fishing is best in the summer months.

If you are interested just give us a call or stop by the shop. Most of the Kiene's staff have fished for Tarpon but so far Jim Christensen, Keith Kaneko and I are the ones who have been on these trips.

Keith Kaneko is the owner of 'Angling On The Fly' travel service located at Kiene's Fly shop. He is the person that handles all the booking of these trips. So far he has booked about 60 people into these two new destinations for 2006.

A standard 5 day / 6 night trip is $2495 until December 1, 2005 when it will go up ~5%. This included lodging, meals, guiding and all transfers. Airfare to Merida or Cancun is not included.

Take a look at the picture gallerys on the 'Angling On The Fly' web site.

This is me and Marco Ruiz, one of the owners, with a 30# Tarpon out of Campeche, Mexico.

PS: After you go on one of these trips you will see what we have been up to for the past 20 years. This is my favorite fishing.
