November 12

The following article was paraphrased from emails by:

Ken W. Davis ken@wildlifefiles.com

The Napa Valley Fly Fishermen have been asked to help with this study. Please respone to
Gary Flanagan (Granite Bay Flycasters) at (Flanagan@surewest.net). Gary has agreed to act as the volunteer coordinator for this study and has the information on start time.

New Zealand Mud Snail densities in sections of the survey area at Putah Creek have reached 509,000 snails per square meter. The DFG tests found some chemicals that will kill them, but the application method would require one to carry around a couple of gallons of the chemical. Patagonia has provided a $2000 donation for testing a new spray-on chemical November 12 at fishing access #5. 50 participants are needed to get the statistics needed, and the Fly Fishers of Davis and the Napa Valley Fly Fishermen have been asked to participate.

Two products will be tested. The most exciting is the copper sulfate boot-cleaning system. All volunteers will be treated to a barbeque and a couple of give-away items including a pair of Patagonia wading boots. Aquatic biologist Ken Davis's current DFG Scientific Collection Permit and NZMS addendum will cover required permits (ken@wildlifefiles.com).

Due to the necessity of knowing the number of volunteers (for the free lunch), and the cost and importance of this project, volunteers are asked to register. Gary Flanagan (Granite Bay Flycasters) has agreed to act as the volunteer coordinator. Please register with Gary Flanagan: Flanagan@surewest.net

If you can’t walk the course, volunteers are required for other tasks, so please let Gary know if you are a course-walker or other volunteer.
