Thanks for posting these Jay, these are awesome. I hope to be there some day. Did you throw anything (with a hook on it) towards the shark?

We didn't have to throw any bait, the sharks were after the tuna and the goldens. We even had one shark chase the tuna under the boat and grabbed the prop by misstake.

Aloha Jay, that top pic is of an awa. That is a great picture. I have caught them to 40lbs. They are wild on fly tackle, but how did you get them to eat? I find that they won't take a moving fly. I just let it sink to the bottom and let them suck it up.
I also like that african pompano, we have one here called a kagami or threadfin ulua. I have yet to catch on of those. How do you handle landing fish in chest deep water? I like to play them up to the sand and then grab the tail. Problem with the papio and jacks is the knife blade on the tail. I use a rubber glove if I have the time, or just try and not get cut too bad. Great pictures. Have you caught an awa or milkfish yet? Way to go, Mems.

Hey Don,

I have yet to catch a milk fish but did have a coulple of followers. the guy who caught that fish was using a torn up white clouser.
On landing the fish, if the boat is close, we use a net but in this case you can imagine how far the boat is. We started in knee deep water

  Bored ?!?

ARE YA NUTS :?:

The guy who figures out how to hook Milkfish will be the man of the hour - Some are chumming the 'pet' ones w/ bread ,then , swapping a bread-fly to them . I have been told they fight like rockets - complete horrors on fly gear .

What kind of Snapper is that one ???

David,

That snapper is a fingermark. There are other such as the sweet lips, nannyguy, coral trout, blue tusk fish. They are all neat fish and can be caught on flies. All you have to do is fish the "berly" (chum slick) in English over the reefs and you will see many different creatures.
There were schools of milk fish but they are just like carp. I have to figure out what there eating and put alot of casting time in. Next year, I'm taking an all white - fluffy little fly.

Gorgeous pictures Jay! You should submit a couple of those (especially the milk) To a magazine like FFSW. Thats one of the most coveted fish and I'm sure the world would love to see it. I sure do.

Great work

Tony,

I'm shooting a Minolta 7D 6.1 mega pixel. I use two different lenses.
A 17/35mm and a 28/200mm. I also shot 25 rolls of Fujichrome still viewing and scanning slides

Verrrry nice. Now that's a milkfish! Hey partner it looked like everyone was having a grand time. Amazing variety of species in that area. Are you guys scouting a new spot or two on the next trip?

Yeah, next year I planning a 4 to 5 week stay (depends on the calendar dates) I would like to do back to back trips on the boat and then spend a week in Sydney fishing and then fly to Darwin for some big barra's.
Met alot of great guys this trip who like to fish. A guy named Jono Shales is a fishing machine. Attached is a photo of him. He's the one on the left

Sorry about the photo but I had to post this one

Aloha Jay, once again great pictures of the fish. I have heard of guys in the seychelles catching awa on the fly. I think they have a seaweed fly for them. I would like to see what it looks like. Here in Hilo we have huge awa, over 40lbs cruising around eating limu, or seaweed. I have caught one that big on an 8wt with 8lb fluro tippet. I was fishing for papio, and I had a crazy charlie on the bottom. This awa comes by, and sucks up the fly with the seaweed. I set the hook and he looked at me kinda funny and then went ballistic. They are very fast and speed jump like a salmon away from you. I fought him for about 45 minutes, running around trees and along the bank. He finally tired, and I got him into shore. I grabbed his tail and he bolted away and broke the leader. I have caught and landed and released another smaller one about 10lbs. I found out there is no IGFA line class record for these fish. So the next one I catch I will probably keep. I have heard of guys making limu flies, and putting a cork in the hook so it will float. I might try and make something like that. They will eat floating seaweed in the early morning and late evening hours. They do have a soft mouth and the hook tears out very easily. I have hooked a number of others, but lost them this way, or they simply break you off. If I can ever figure out how to catch them on a regular basis, then I would be stoked. They are kinda the holy grail for me over here. It is just so frustrating to see these huge fish cruising around and you can only catch them by being lucky. Mems.

Hey Mark,

Bill & I will be looking at a date for me do to a Australian slide presentation in the shop. Although it's becoming an expensive trip and it's a long flight, it's all worth it. I will be returning next year for my 6th trip and most of the Aussie's and New Zealander's on the boat this year were there last year

Keep checking the site for future show dates

Jay
