Wellllll, my buddy and fellow board member David Lee and I went wet wading after some creek bass again today!! This place was INFESTED with 'em too, just like the last place he took me to. 8) Caught a mess of smallmouth bass, spotted bass, and a few green sunfish. Between the two of us, we probably landed all told around 70 fish and dropped others. David Lee's reddish, purplish, burnt orange size 8 cone-headed mohair style leech seemed to be the hot pattern for the biggest ones but we also caught them on just about everything else from crease flies to clousers. I used a size 6 black strymph for most of the day and did well. David also tossed his awesome Bugskin Craw for a little while and caught nice fish -- swear the damn thing looks real once it gets wet. 8) For this kind of fly fishing, a short 7 - 8 foot rod is best, given a lot of tight cover in places. David used a 7 1/2 foot 4 wt., I used an 8 foot 5 wt. You'll probably want to leave your spey rod at home.

Most ranged in size today from about 6" to about 13". Unfortunately, David caught the biggest ones.  And, once again, fishing with David was like going to fly fishing school -- not only did he tell me where the fish would be and how to present to them (I'm starting to think he's part fish) but he also gave me valuable fly fishing tips. For example, he very gently and kindly reminded me that (i) the fish are in the water, not in the air (apparently you can't catch 'em while false casting. . .) and (2) fish don't climb trees.

In any case, here's several pictures of David with various fish. Note the variations in colors of these fish, especially the striking patterns on the first one:

Here's some close-ups of some fish that, although they weren't by any means the biggest ones caught today, nevertheless, I thought you would find the color variations interesting, especially since they all came from the same place:

Once again, it was a BLAST!! GREAT company, lots of action, what more does one need besides more time? Thank you very much for showing me around again David, had a screamin' good time today! Wet wading for creek bass is a very fun way to spend a hot summer day. 8) I CAN'T WAIT to do it again!!! :D

I'll add a little bit here ....

The day started off a little slow , with just a few fish to hand ...

We changed spots , and found the MOTHERLOAD  :!:

Strange thing - the later in the day and hotter it got ... the better the fishing was ! Some high points were 15+ fish out of the same (large) pool by myself , 'Stacker tying on a huge chart/white Clouser (at noon , mind you ...) , and getting nailed twice on his FIRST cast with it , fights with good Bass that took us UNDER rock ledges  , and FLAMING-RUST Dragonflies keeping us company . 8)

Low points include ..... Picking flies out of trees (BOTH of us ... ) , losing around 60% of takes , kamikazi-style wading/tripping , and having to let Hairstacker go home (swear to God .... I'm gonna start hiding his car-keys someday ....) .

Mike - I'm going to see your first small-stream Smallmouth over 2 lbs. by the end of the summer .... IF IT KILLS ME

All in all , pretty good day , to put it mildly :P Thanks for the company 8) :!: 8)

Looks like you boys had a real fun day sloshing about.
Those are great photos and some incredible color variations.

Dave, Why the long sleeves on a hot day? West Nile? Poison Oak?

Hi Tony !!

SKIN CANCER - I have a tendancy to burning (the joys of being Irish and Dutch  ) , and in the past few years , have had many (20-30) 'funny' things frozen off my back/shoulders . If I use sunscreen , it clogs up my pores pretty bad , so I try to keep covered as much as possible .

I never had much of a problem w/ poison oak , and don't worry about WNV . This flyfishing stuff is dangerous business ......

EPIC day out there , we had a screamin fun time and i hope we get out there again soon !

I think many of us are missing some great local fly fishing.

I guess in Nor Cal we have almost too many choices?

Great report and photos...........thanks

Hey David
I fished your stream again last night for just 2 hours. Landed around 20 missed many. The new hot fly for the night is one I tied several years ago and never used. It was a WALLY WALKER steelhead fly cast down and across to skate.
You learn something every time you go. Those bass will eat anything.
No big ones last night, but the 10" fish on a 3 wt. is real fun.
I do it a little different than you DAVID,I stay mostly on the surface. I found I need to change flies a lot as I fish that water 2 to 3 times a week. Those fish get smart and won't eat the same fly for weeks. I have gone through Gurglers, hair poppers and hard bodies as the season progresses. Oh! Yeah! The trees get thier share too.

Sturmer -

Didja notice how clear that water is ?? It was like glass down to 4 feet when Mike and I were out ...

The Bass (larger ones , anyways ...) wanted small stuff 'hovered' 6 inches off the bottom w/ little action . I don't remember the last time I landed 7 over 12 inches out there - crazy day !!

Have fun in Montana , stay out of trouble
