I once had an in depth discussion with Chico Fernandez about canoes. He and Flip Palot and many others use canoes in Florida for fly fishing for tarpon, snook and black bass in the Everglades and other FL back waters. Most of the water is fairly flat with little or no current.

They use a canoe that is called a ‘tumblehome’ or ‘cottage’ canoe.

Chico uses a Merrimack ‘Souhegan’ that is 16’ long and 36” wide. It has no rocker and has a small keel. They paddle if they are in water deeper than 4 feet. If it is less than 4 feet deep they use a 12’ pole to push the canoe along.

Another canoe that the guys in Florida like is the Navarro ‘Otter 16’ which is the same design and same dimensions.
