What are a few of your favorite flies for Dorado?

Deeper streamers?

Surface 'stuff'? steamers, poppers.........

Pictures would be nice but if not please describe colors and length.

Thanks

Didn't mean to ignore you on this, Bill  . Haven't caught a Dorado on a fly yet.... Scared some, tho.... :P :P

I'm really sold on two patterns for most Baja fly fishin'. Jay Murakoshi's Sardina Sea Habit and my own version of a Mullet pattern.... I won't describe Jay's pattern as it's already famous (infamous too). :P :P :P

The Mullet pattern is tyied on hooks from size 1/0 to 4/0 and ranges from approximately 3" to 8" in length. It's a combination of a Sea Habit and Rasta Fly...  . Still working out some of the details but intend to test my skills with it in July..... The longer length is tied with tandem hooks and is intended more for trolling than casting.... :D The hooks used for the tandem version are Mustad 34011 or equivalent (front) and Eagle Claw 9174 or equiv., for the rear.

Gonna have to get a digital camera for some pictures....

By any chance didja see my post, "East Cape.... What Gives :?: :?: " I'd be interested in your input..... 8) 8)

Ahhhh, Loreto!

Start every patty with poppers and strip as fast as you can. Lots of spash. The more the better. Just make sure your pangero doesn't throw out too many sardinas. Only a few at a time or else those guys will get full and stop chasing your fly.

Once the surface activity slows, then go to any of the sardina patterns. About 4" with white and pearl body but definitely olive across the back, and EYES. Don't ever leave off the eyes. That's a trigger for those guys.

But definitely start with poppers and go as long as you can till your arms give out.

Can you tell I LOVE IT ?

Here is one of Carl's salt water poppers that many use in Loreto in July when Carl is down there.

Carl takes ~1,500 streamers and poppers to sell down with him for his yearly 2 week trip at the Oasis Hotel.

I like to have a 12 weight rod with a Tarpon WF13F for throwing poppers for Dorado.

I would probably have at least one of all the flies mentioned. However here is my "Don't Leave Home Without" Box.

Gary,.... I recognize all of the patterns except the one on the bottom of the picture.... That fly doesn't appear on your site. Cool lookin' fly.... 8) 8) If it's not a "secret" pattern and you wouldn't mind telling us, what it is :?: :?:

That is Frank Smethurst's Rasta.

Here is a link to the recipe the only difference is the collar which is olive in the photo instead of beige.

Here is a fly that Josh is using on the beach today

Pretty straight forward using Yak with a little flash. Your basic mullet pattern for the beach. Notice the gold eyes.

BTW We don't have any secert patterns

This is one of Carl's billfish tube flies that is over 12 inches long.

Pink seems to be a very popular color for billfish in Mexico and Costa Rica.

Hi Bill,

I was talking with Capt. Jake Jordan a while back about billfishing and he mentioned that one of the reasons "pink" is so popular is that it photographs well and people like to see color.

When that billfish is teased up to the transon, he is so lit-up and excited he'll hit just about anything and a darker or more natural colored fly might be easier for him to find.

What's your thinking?

Hey Tony,.... I don't have a lot of experience with Billfish on a fly but have seen several taken; all on natural colors... 8) . But, attractor/teasers all seem to come in variety of colors... :? .

I do believe that purple/black in combo is good as those colors are prominent in the 12" Squid that I saw washed up on shore in Baja... 8) 8) . Otherwise, I'd go for something that goes with the hotest bait fish colors 8) .
