Local drift boat guide Keith Kaneko just called me on his way home from the Lower Yuba River tonight.

He said he was worried this morning because it was pretty slow but after they had lunch the afternoon was very good with plenty of wild Rainbow trout and a wild spring-run Steelhead too.

He is using big black rubber legs on the bottom and said he was also using a caddis pupa in the afternoon.

This makes sense because with the snow melt the water is very cold in the morning but warms with the sun all day.

I would fish the Yuba from mid-day till sunset.

When the water is very cold in the winter and spring, early morning and after the sun gets off the water in the PM can be very slow.

From mid-day till sunset the water is warming a few degrees which make things happen.

I wish that was the case yesterday! Those fish had lockjaws all day. Keith is the yuba master though and always seems to get those fish to bite.
