What are a few of your favorite trout lakes in CA?

My first trout lake was Lake Solano on lower Putah Creek. We float-tubed it in the '60s & ‘70s.

Next was McCumber Reservoir east of Redding. This is one of my favorites.

We also fished Manzanita Lake on the same trips which is at a higher elevation just inside the Lassen Park.

We fished Martis and Milton out of Truckee.

Indian Creek Reservoir was fun.

The big deal for us in 1976 was Crane Prairie Reservoir in Oregon. Joe Patterson, our Cortland Rep, took us there.

After that we fished a bunch of lakes over in Nevada out of Elko.

Hmmmmmm ..... That depends on what kind of Trout I want to catch .

For Browns , Milton was hard to beat in the late 80s , I don't know how it fishes now . Amador was good for sight-fishing those big CuttBows , but also has gone down the tubes due to trash and rednecks ...
I hope to take my first Mackinaw on a fly this coming winter in Sly park (Jenkinson) - they are neat fish !! David

I like Fuller Lake for a guick day trip. It's a nice little lake.

I would like to fish Lake Davismore in the future. Those are hard fighting trout. I also like the huge hatches Lake Davis offers.

I like fishing smaller lakes like this one in the Trinity Alps.

In consecutive wet years McCoy Flat use to produce some very fat fish. When I was a CA resident I always thought the best stillwater fishing was the 2-3 week window in Oct. on Merle Collins, Berryessa and Oroville when the thread fin shad came to the surface in large schools and the trout chomped on them. Really exciting to see 10-15 trout jumping a school of shad on the surface and you only had seconds to react before all was calm again.

I hear they recently had the annual spring trout derby at Rancho Seco so there are a ton of trout in there now.

This is a pretty nice place to go. Bass/panfish in the warmer months too.

Wow, nice pictures. How successfull were you in that week? Reminds me of some hiking I did up in Tahoe last year, we ran into several lakes like that.

I forgot the names already of these lakes, but here is where I went near Tahoe (Overnight backpacking). Only bad thing was it was a 3,000 elevation climb and a 6-7 mile trip up there! I like to sleep comfortably so I carry a 60-70 lb pack too. I was too damn tired to do any fishing when I got up there, only did a little the following day.

Rob is sure right about the Trinities and Marble Mountain Wilderness areas - spent many days up there in the late 60's and 70's and still make a trip up there once or twice a year - one place I don't mind keeping a few brookies for the frying pan.

Hey Rick and Gregg.

I love the Trinity Alps .

It's one of the most breautiful places I have been.

The lakes are full of Brook trout and a few Rainbows.

We ate Brookies for dinner every other night .

Two years ago we packed in two float tubes, my pack was 70lbs.

Last year we left the tubes at home and we caught just as many fish off the bank.

We will be going again this sept. for a week of fly fishing and Traditional bow hunting.

Greg and Rob, gorgeous pictures! Would love to get into places like that but a 6-7 mile hike over rough country sounds like a bit much. Rob, was your hike in that far too?
