I think it is a Grass Carp?

It might be a Squafish but it looks like it has larger scales.

Hey Bill,

Not sure what that is..... looked at a lot of pictures of grass carp.... the scale pattern doesn't look quite right but it does have a similar body shape.... The mouth is not quite the same either but is similar as well...

Have to look around some more I guess. But it looks pretty big too....

More later!

Hi Bill,..... That's a big Carp :!: :!: You caught that fish on a fly :?: :?:

Got a picture of a Grass Carp and a description in the Audubon Field Guide. Your fish seems to fit them. The lone exception might be that your fish doesn't seem to have a forked tail. The picture in the guide does appear to have one.... :? :?

Even so, it sounds like a Grass Carp to me. 8) 8)

Squawfish have much bigger mouths, so I'm guessing it is a carp, but I'm no expert on them. I'll bet it was fun to catch! :P

Bill:

Actually, I may have spoken (clicked) too soon. After firing off that last message based on my memory of catching some pretty big Sacramento Squawfish on the Yuba, but never taking a photo, I tried to find a Squawfish photo on the web. Here are a couple of links:

The scales, shape of the head, and fins look pretty similar to your photo. The mouth still looks small to me, but maybe it is just the angle of the phot.

After referring to my field guide, again, I still think it's a Grass Carp. The field guide says that a Squawfish has a moderately forked tail and a mouth that extends to the eye.

The picture, above, doesn't appear to have a forked tail and the mouth doesn't appear to make it to the eye.... 8)
