Spey action on Lower Yuba river................

Local Spey enthusiast Ray Rivera has a big day yesterday while swinging wet flies on his Spey rod on the lower Yuba River with guide Keith Kaneko.

Ray Rivera is in great form with his Spey rod on the lower Yuba River yesterday.

Nice to see spey reports for trout fishing. I have not had much time to use my new spey rod but would love to hit the yuba with it. Those fish love flies on the swing! What were the luck patterns or is that a secret!

It's been well published on the board that olive zonkers are a big hit on the Yuba. It represents a young juvenile sucker fish. I have used this pattern religiously, and had some religious experiences with this pattern.

Since the Yuba is not a very wide river, please do not make the mistake of stepping in too far in the run. Very common mistake done by anglers in this river. If your going to swing, start with a short roll cast with 6 feet of line out, and your 10-15 ft poly sink tip.

The fish shown here caught on Wed. was a result of this method. We all love glorious aerial casts, but sometimes the fish you miss, are the ones you almost stepped on... :shock: Tight lines my friends..... Enjoy..[/list]

Hi Ray,..... Just a note to reinforce your point about wading in too deep to start with. I agree that too many anglers think that they have to wade up to their armpits and cast clear across the river. I'm including myself in this as I learned that lesson the hard way on the Garcia River. :(

One AM many moons ago, I rose at dawn and found myself ready to fish Minor Hole on a rising tide. The water was calm with little breeze blowing. 8) My partner and I took two steps into the water and saw five wakes streaking off in all directions from a point about 15' in front of us. :shock: Didn't get another chance there. :oops:

Once while fishing the Estuary in the San Lorenzo River (Santa Cruz), I saw a bunch of fish go right behind a line-up of flyfisherman casting to the opposite bank. They were in about 2' of water. :roll:

In some cases, it pays to start casting prior to entering the water.... 8)

I'm glad you had fun on the Yuba with the spey Ray. Good advice about casting and fishing short first.

Ray, i have to agree with you. I have caught many nice fish on the yuba swinging olive zonkers fairly close to shore. I have found that many steelhead and even rainbows in the find the path of least resistence and will hold in shallow water. Those are some beautiful fish. Keep up the catching and the reports.

Adam, i am coming back march 2-6 and my dad and i are fishing with Keith on the 4th on the yuba. I might be able to sneak out for half a day on the weeken if you want. My girlfriend is coming back with me so i don't know if i can get out for a full day. Would love to take the spey rods out and fish. Have not practiced too much so i could also use some help. Let me know.
