Here is a picture of Andy Guibord with a small wild trout on the NF of the Yuba River one summer. It is closed now.

I was just talking to Adam about the fabled "secret spot" in Auburn (I think Rob knows about it...) and about how bad I want it to be summer again! Nothing beats hooking up fiesty rainbows in small-stream pocket water, except for battling a winter steelie in January... I guess I don't mind the cold sometimes! The 3 wt is looking mighty tempting lately however.

Hello everyone,..... The picture of Andy on the NF yuba reminds me of the times I've fished upstream from the forks into the Downie River and Lavezola Creek..... In that time (60's/70's) it was dry fly fishing. The flies were the Rio Grande King Bucktail, Reggie and Renegade. The fishin' was very good and the largest fish were in the 10" to 12" range and lots of 'em. In some of the deeper holes, there were larger fish. 8)

In that time I fished with a Walton Powell, 9' cane rod that felt like a feather in my hands. Can't recall the line weight but it was probably a 6 or 7 wt. We camped out after Labor Day weekend at a forest service location on the NF, downstream from Downieville..... :D :D

There are many small streams in the foothills that are full of small trout. This spot Cody is fishing is full of fish . Small Stimulators in size 16 with a yellow body and Royal wolfs are our favorite Flies. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v636/rgkempton/DSCN1376.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v636/rgkempton/DSCN0035.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v636/rgkempton/DSCN0036.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v636/rgkempton/DSCN1398.jpg

Yep, I wholeheartedly agree, GREAT pictures Rob. In fact, I brought my boys over to the computer to assess how old they thought Cody is in the pics, as I think they're approaching the same age so I was thinking I need to get them out to some spots like that -- some place fun, relatively safe and accessible, with very willing fish. :)

Cody will be 16 in two weeks. He and His brother who is 18 have been F .Fishing for 7 years. When my boys are gone and on their own I will be one sad camper. They both can out fish and cast me. They both have had a lesson with Jeff P. I would like to see more kids both boys and girls out fishing with mom and dad. Here is a photo of Jason when we backpacked into the Trinity Alps for week of f.fishing and bowhunting .
You can e-mail me and I will be glad to tell you about some good places to take your boys.
Take care . Rob

Here is a Photo of Jason and Jake . Jason helped Jake catch his first trout on a fly rod. He landed 6 or 7 fish this day . I think Jake is now hooked on f.fishing also.

Here is a Photo of Cody and Scotty . This is Scotty's first fish on a Fly Rod.
They landed this fish on the Yuba with sinktip and a Green Zonker.

Great pix Rob. I am in the process of teaching my young son to FF and those photos have got me real excited for this spring/summer. Since I am realatively new to the area, I will email you for some info on those locations. Thanks again for the great pix! Derek

Thank you so much for sharing your pictures with us, my daughter, now 2 1/2, I cannot wait until she is old enough to be introduced. We currently take her camping and went on one short backpack this summer. Camping has been wonderful and rides on our boat has been great as well.
Thanks again
Jon

If you have not tried a small light fly rod on these small streams it is a "gas".

Many will be using a fairly powerful 9' #5 or even #6 weight fly rod for this and it is not near as much fun.

I think that 7.5' to 8.5' in line sizes 2 through 4 are best.

We like these little rods to be softer so they are fun even with a n 8" wild trout.

The small fly reels we use are not very important for the little guys.

We use modern new double tarper line and the special Sage "Quiet Taper" lines designed by Dave Whitlock for these fun little outifts.

We have these little small stream outfits starting at under $200 complete so be sure to take a look at them.

Right on Bill, I can't wait to take out my 2 wt for fishing the streams and lakes around Saddlebag lake outside of Tuolumne Meadows and farther south in the Golden Trout Wilderness. Brookies and Goldens!! Woo hoo! My mind is already switching from steelheading to back country as I type. :D

Your Right Bill.
I have a 3 wt 7.5 and I love it.
