I've been dreaming of fishing for steelies up by Anderson for years. I'm taking the drifter up there next week to give it shot. If anyone has any experience on what stretch to start searching on this time of year, it would be sincerely appreciated.
Thanks in advance, Vince

I have caught a few drifting for trout and they were below Balls Ferry.

Lower drifts are better for steelhead. Anderson to Balls/Roosters is an easy drift. Anderson to Barge is a long drift and you need to watch your time/milestones, but it's doable. Barge Hole can get crowded with gear guys fishing for salmon. Do you have a motor? Wind can get tough above Barge Hole. If you are not familiar with the drift below Anderson, stay to the inside of the sharp right turn a quarter mile below Anderson ramp; whitewater and clay drops can get hazardous at some flows. You can drift Balls/Roosters to Barge or to Jelly's Ferry. Last time I checked some shuttle drivers didn't like serving Barge, so you may need to shuttle yourself.

I live in Red Bluff and have fished the Sac for steelhead for years. I will have a current report after Tuesday as I will be fishing then. For the most part I would say fish below Battle Creek as the returning fish are headed for the hatchery. The only way to truly say a fish caught is a steelhead is if it is fin clipped. I have caught wild fish and seen fish caught that could be argued are steelhead all the way up to Redding. many of these fish in the 20 plus inch categories. I believe the DFG rule is any fish above 16 inches caught in the Sac is considered a steelhead. With all this said the Anderson float you mentioned is very good one and you will have a fun time. Good luck
