My goofy way of fishing for shad is to paddle a little inflatable kayak out to a spot, anchor up, and swing downstream. It can actually be quite fun, hanging your feet in current and almost falling in when you try to net a big one.

I've done this at the Verona confluence, but I'd really like to branch out to some of the spots higher up the river. Is there good shad water close to places like Star Bend and Shanghai Bend? I can paddle up to a half mile up solid current these days, and have been known to tug my yak on a leash through knee-deep riffles :)

Anything you're willing to share would be appreciated, thanks!

You could try Boyds pump below Shangheigh Bend

Yuba City boat launch. Just go across river to mouth of the Yuba. More than decent chance of landing a half dozen species of fish there.

Thanks for the ideas gentlemen!

Seems like it might make sense to do a float from Yuba City down to Boyd's pump and scout things out along the way.

Gotta be careful of the Shangheigh rapids doing that float.
