I am a beginner steelhead angler and so this year I am determined to catch a steelhead on the American each season. I have caught a couple summer steelhead, and now I知 on to fall steelhead. I am treating them like trout, but as for the fall I知 trying to follow the salmon to located fish feeding on eggs. I was too busy to fish most of the fall, but now I am free to fish the rest of the year. I just got out on Saturday to Hagan Park and caught a small wild smolt and a 24 inch pikeminnow. I was nymphing with a leader of 1ft of 20lb to 8ft of 15lb, then to split shot and tippet (3x and 4x Flourocarbon). I think I was not getting deep enough with the thicker leader, as I only caught the fish in walking speed or less current. I値l be back out Friday evening so I値l switch up to 10lb main leader to see if that helps. Any tips you have would be appreciated.

Might try a sink tip. Depending on your rod limits. T12 or T14 will eliminate the shot and tapered leader.
