Dusk yesterday, big cold water, saw one fly rod waving at the log hole, which still has the same log despite all the Corps flood control work. And one big seal. I yelled at it to go back to the ocean, but it continued upstream, probably going up to lunch down on hatchery fish. Or shad that we haven't found yet.

With the low number of all anadromous fisheries, predators are having a serious impact.
That seal might be following the Shad right now. Thanks.

I was interested in the topic, so I looked up predation by sea lions on American shad. One article mentioned that sea lions may actually prefer shad to salmon, which is very interesting to me, anyway! I don't think we've ever had to worry about shad numbers. I'm confident we can all share.

While visiting the Paradise Beach area during out Shad Clinic we saw a very large sea lion swim by with a very large Shad in its mouth. We were just about one hundred yards downstream from the Log Hole.
