Anyone been fishing for halfpounders or chrome? Even lampreys or squawfish? Anything?

The Kiene report is getting stale - latest is from 11/7.

Been slow for me. Did manage to get a 20 inch Sqaw the other day. Trying to get out at least acouple times a week.
Should be some adults showing up soon. Lots of spawned out salmon milling around.

Smitty, thanks for the report. It’s a great time of the year to be on the river. Flows are ideal. I just need to make time to get out there.

A month ago I stumbled on several prolific fig trees for a nice treat. Other years all trees were barren.

Are there actually lamprey still there?? No lower news, stinky

Off topic…
Ventured up river to the confluence, the Middle Fork was chocolate milk, probably from runoff in the fire area. North Fork looked good. I just drove around making a plan for this week. Sorry no fishing report. Just thought I’d give you’all, as seen. Fished South Fork around Greenwood at low level week day (skunked again).

Something else I found there is a state park limited pass for $20 if you are 62+. Can’t use it between Memorial and Labor Day, but good for the rest of the year. Parking is $10 most places and not sure how much for Folsom Lake.

I just made that part up. I've never seen one.

Re: the MFA, I think they're doing something at Oxbow with the dam or the turbines. There are pulse flows, which is unusual this time of year.

Well, at least I can tie flies.

Lamprey come up to spawn in April, there’s been a few here and there the last couple of years.
I saw a mink catch one at paradise about a month ago, had no idea there were still some around. He swam right by my foot, no mistaking what it was.

Any word on fish count at Nimbus?

Any word on fish count at Nimbus? Winter Steelhead are not here in any numbers yet. What fish are in head straight to the basin now that the river has dropped to 2000 cfs. I can tell you that the river is absolutely PLUGGED with salmon and I estimate there to be somewhere between 1,500 and 2,000 redds which by far surpasses the amount of natural spawning I've witnessed during any fall for the last 20 years...Hopefully, DWR doesn't pull the plug and leave 'em all high and dry like they do every other year...

According to the charts outflow at Folsom was 5k for 4 hrs last night, but out flow at Natoma didn’t change.
Keeping the river closed for salmon take maybe a good thing. I may walk the north side between olive and hazel today.

Lampreys are Satan’s spawn

Nah, native lampreys are cool; about half the species aren't even parasitic. Politicians are Satan's spawn! ALL of them are spineless, blood-sucking parasites! ;)

There are steelhead in the holding area at the Natoma hatchery.

Nice, I need to check it out, but every time I'm there I'm in my fishing gear and they won't let you in like that.

Can anyone recommend a shuttle service on the lower A? Thanks.

Just heard from unsubstantiated source that a bunch of winter fish just came into the system this past week.
I'm working to get some confirmation. When I do I will post it on the AR page of californiafishingreports.com

I’ve spent a few day’s at river bend. No luck, cold feet, haven’t seen the few others fishing catch anything. Haven’t spotted any rolls ether. Probably check grist mill tomorrow.
Hope they don’t cut flows.

Stopped at the hatchery, loaded, though many of the big trout are pretty beat up. The volunteer said it’s good numbers at all the hatchery’s.

Spotted two sea lions at the 160 bridge. Good luck to fish coming up.

Fished Gristmill, nice area a lot of room, no hits, didn’t see any others catching either. 2000cfs is a good flow rate.
Kind of think the trout are just going straight through to Hazel Hatchery.
The upper river will be busy and foggy today. Have and keep it clean.

2,000 cfs is perfect for wading.

Yes ago, Jim Freeman said, in one of his SH guidebooks, to keep moving till you find them.

The Lower American River, at this flow, has maybe 30 riffles. (a change or drop in elevation).

Captain Andy Guibord knows where they all are from running the river in a drift boat and jet boat for 30 years.

In the past 50 years in high flows, they seem to be in the top 5 miles below the Nimbus Dam.

In low flows, we saw them stop, hold up and spawn down near Sac State University.

Days are short for Winter run Steelhead.

Up to 6000 cfs today. I’m hoping it starts dropping this weekend. Keeping fingers crossed.

Anyone know water clarity since flows gone up
To 6000 cfs?

I have been out 5x since the beginning of January. I think I am a decent fisherman. Swinging traditional flies, indo/bobber with smaller flies. Nothing. Nothing like it was 20 years ago.

I know, we would go down to the American years ago and be on a riffle with no fish and soon start doubting our ability to catch fish.

In March/April we sometimes get some Bluebacks or wild spring run fish that are maybe 4 pounds and hot.
