Surprise from Lake Natoma this morning

I think this one is a little confused…

Stunned to see this Hex on a window screen this AM. I’ve lived on the north shore of Natoma for seven years, and this is only the second one I’ve had at the house. They still come off sporadically in July on 100 degree days, but on 9/29? When the overnight temps are in the 50’s?

I don't know about Natomas, but Hex's have good hatches on a few other foothill lakes October and November. I've had some really good Hex fishing in snow storms on these lakes.

I used to work at the Sac State Aquatic center when I was in college and saw a lot of hex hatches on that lake. Never once did I see a fish rise for them on that lake. Granted I was only there during daylight hours but was still astonished nothing was eating them.

I remember an older friend years ago telling me about fishing that hatch. Probably in the 80s. Yellow wooly bugger on a greased leader was the ticket and he said the rainbows were really big.

Maybe 40 years ago we would go out to Lake Natomas in the evening and fish the Hex emergence in the summer.

We used prams and float tubes. We had good Hex patterns because of the Fall River Hex activity.

I think we used the Quigley Hex Cripple?

I think people caught bass, carp and planted Rainbow trout.






Lincoln and Lance Gray have fished and guided the Hex hatch on Lake Almanor for decades.


Terry Thomas and his bunch have fished the Hex hatch on the Fall River for decades as well.




Lake Natomas is a really different lake. Other than the Spring bass fishery Folsom Lake is not an easy fishery either.

Only a few have ever really fished them a lot that I know of.

My friend Duane Calkins did put in some time on Natomas maybe 30 years ago.
