Every fly fisher needs a little fly rod for small stream dry fly fishing.

It could be fiberglass, graphite or split cane.

I like 7' to 8' rods in #3 or #4 line sizes.

This would be a great one.........

I have had some really memorable days with my small dry fly rods.

One was at Rock Creek in Montana with dry fly expert David Armocido from Colusa, California.

I don't think David ever made a cast, but he did point out all the places that the fish normally hold.

It was like being with a guide so I landed 67 wild trout in 4 species?

Another was with David Armocido, veteran guide Fred Gordon and myself.

We were on Stoney Creek, west of Maxwell, California.

David invited us both because the creek was "on fire".

Naturally fishing barbless, we carefully released hundreds of small wild trout.

One evening was on the South Fork of the American river up near Kyburs Lodge.

My good friend, Mike Ziem, had an invite to drive up to someone's cabin for a day of fishing.

We drove down into a small tract of cabins and parked by his friend's cabin to access the river.

We dropped into the river, wading upstream into a narrow remote canyon.

That evening the river was really alive and fish were swimming just under the smooth surface.

We cast #14 yellow Humphies but I think any dry fly would have worked.

Most were small Brown trout aggressively taking anything on the surface.

Another great small rod day was on Pleasant Valley Creek near Markleeville, California.

Bob Giannoni and I drove up for the day and it was before the stream became private.

It is an open meadow stream with great visibility so the fish were spooky.

Bob is one of the best small stream nymph fishers I know.

I was upstream, crouched down, watching some trout holding around some large rocks.

Bob cast a small #14 grey nymph up and above the fish.

He had about a one-inch piece of bright orange, hollow, SA fly line indicator on the top of his leader.

It was exciting to see the fish eat the nymph and take off.

Bob had lots of practice in Montana on small streams in private ranches.

Bob liked to cast upstream and slide his nymph into overhanging grass banks to roll out hiding Brown trout.

It was a great education for me......
