Was up in the area this past weekend. The salmon fly hatch has started. First time for me seeing adult stoneflies that big flying around. Really cool.

It is time to start going up there.......

This is one of California's finest medium size freestone streams.

Those large adult salmon flies of several varieties will be flying around on the sunny afternoons.

June is on average the peak month on the Upper Sac but this year it will probably be May.

This year it will slow some after the 4th of July.

Call Bob Grace at the Ted Fay Fly Shop in Dunsmuir.

We had a cabin there in Dunsmuir for 10 years but are too old to wade there now.

Ya, the Salmon Fly hatch on the Upper Sac is in May, unlike the Golden stones which are mostly in June.
Normally the Salmon Fly hatch is hard to fish because the river is in snowmelt most of May with flows over 1,000 CFS
This year not so much. Could be a great May.

I was fortunate enough to experience the beginning of the hatch throughout this week, as well. I was amazed to see the size of the nymph casings on the rocks first, before eventually spotting adults on brush and fluttering around. Seeing a few picked out of the air by eager birds was the icing on that front.
