Every few years I think it would be a good idea to head up to Caples Lake early in the spring and see if I can catch a lake trout on a fly. Seems like a sinking line and a fast stripped streamer ought to work. Anybody been successful at this or is it a fool's errand. Did I already miss the window of opportunity?

Let me know what you think.

I am not sure when ice out will begin, changes every year depending on the snow pack. The best time to get a Mac is right at ice out. They drained the lake for repairs several years ago and and removed a lot of fish. I don't know if there are any Mac's left in the lake. I would consider calling CA fish and wildlife and speak with a fisheries biologist...hope that helps.

Nice. I'm keeping an eye on ice out at both Silver Lake and Caples.
