Anyone ever fished the Pit (high flow regime) in later March/early April? Was thinking Pit 4. I'm sure the weather is bit unpredictable but maybe some of bigger bugs are active at that point in the season? Any intel would be greatly appreciated.

I was looking at heading that way the 2nd week of March. Called the Fly Shop, Redding. The word is watch the flows as they are doing construction and my weekend looks like a bust. I'd give them a call and look at the dream flows sight I believe they have flow predictions. Otherwise the upper sac sounds good.

June is usually the peak month for mid-elevation trout streams on a normal year.......average.

Looks like we are in a drought cycle again? so May might be the peak month this year.

So April would be a good bet to go early?

You might call Bob Grace @ the Ted Fay Fly Shop in Dunsmuir, CA for his best guess.

Some will go to the Pit river once a year and some will go 6 to 12 times.

If you are going once you need to go "prime time" for that year.

As far as I am concerned they destroyed the Pit river for most, except the young and agressive.

It was my favorite trout stream on earth until they messed with the flows.

That said, veteran Nor Cal guide, Fred Gordon fishes it with a wet suit for the CA D of F & W.

He said it is healthier than ever and catches on average 70 trout a day doing these studies.

For years the guys I knew who fished the Pit river early used big black stonefly nymphs.

Excellent advice TH10...........
