I'm still trying to limit my traveling. I'm close enough to day trip Collins Lake. Never fished there. Anyone here fly fished it during the winter? I'm mainly looking for info on how deep to fish, and perhaps what sections of the lake would be best for fly fishing. Thanks in advance.

PM me or give me a call. I'm not an expert, but I have fished it 5 times, 3 in the winter.

Mike,

You didn't say if you'd be fishing from the bank or by boat? I fish it regularly by boat and usually slow troll with orange marabou flies just under the surface. Occasionally we'll head above the bridge and cast toward the bank in the narrows, Casting off the bank near the dam works at times too, but keep moving if you do as the fish travel as well. A boat works better for this and you can cover a lot more water.

Sometimes fishing deep with a sinking line will get you into black bass during winter, while closer to the surface will be more likely to take trout. Strip slow if you're fishing deep as the water gets cold and the fish are slower to react.

Thanks for the info. I have a pontoon boat that I would be fishing out of.

In the middle of Winter in these reservoirs the trout are usually shallow and the bass go deep.

I might try trolling on top or near the top with a Black and a White Crystal Bugger.

Try a size 8 Black first and tie a 20" piece of leader material in the bend of the hook with a size 10 White on the rear?
