What a great old movie.

When I was 14 I tried to do the same trip in our old 12' plywood skiff. We put in at the black railroad bridge and started to motor on up till we got to Paradise Beach and hit our first rock. Drifted back down a ways and put our spare motor on. Motored on up again and hit the same rock. That ended our trip to Nimbus dam.

The American sure brings back a lot of old memories for me when I was growing up.

We have a wonderful older customer who would talk about fishing the Klamath river many years ago in a big wooden boat and they

had two old outboards that they would swap after hitting some rocks. So cool......



I started fishing the lower American river about 60 years ago.

I think the Arden Pond was a private gravel pit business.

Goethe Park was a place to ride dirt bikes.

Right under and slightly upstream of the Watt Avenue Bridge was a small "low water" all concrete bridge that we could walk over to get to the other side of the river on foot.

There was no Howe Avenue Bridge but we could take a gravel road down stream on the south side from Watt access to Howe area.

50 boats would be down by Sacramento State College in the Fall trolling for salmon above the H street bridge.

I saw a giant jet boat on the river once that was like those on the lower rogue river.

Walt Bennet always talked about fishing near PCA on the lower American river for Shad way back when....


In the 1970s the most popular Shad run was at upper Goethe Park and this was before the bridge was built.

On weekends in the Spring as many as 50 anglers would line up, mostly fly fishers.

Back then a good day was 100 shad......

Those giant jet boats were like those mail boats on the Rogue River. If your were wading deep when they came by you really had to have good footing or their wake would knock you over as they didn't slow down.

Later they stopped those boats because of the erosion they caused and soon planted lots of willow trees along the south side below Paradise Beach.

We learned this from Joe Shirshac for Shad and Half-pounder Steelhead.


Back during this film era they use 9' #9 line two piece fiberglass fly rods for Shad, Stripers, Steelhead and Salmon.

I have a copy. It is very good. It's on loan to a buddy that is planning a trip down the Sac in a cedar strip canoe he built recently.

Calvin Chin, an old school Yuba shad regular of the Greatest Generation, used to vary between a dead swing and jigging his shad flies until he figured out which the shad preferred on a particular day.

Once while on the Yuba during a terrific shad bite near Daguerre Dam a buddy and I were high sticking shad flies on a short line and had the opportunity to watch a lot of shad grabs up close. Most times shad in a dense daisy chain would hit the fly as it dropped slightly. Jigging helped increase the number of drops in a drift or swing. And, even on a tight line the shad would often suck in the fly and blow it out with little or no discernible tick in the rod.
