View Full Version : Re-Wrapping Oars...Options???
I have a set of Cataract Oars that need to be rewrapped with rope. Anyone know a local business that does it? Anyone done it and willing to do it for me? I did once years ago and didn’t get the rope tight enough...I remember it being a mess when I went to put the oar stop on and it bunched up the slack badly. Oops. Would be willing to give it another go, but have a lot on my plate. If reasonable would rather pay someone to help me...maybe watch what they do. I have checked YouTube and a few tutorials but don’t feel confident I can get the appropriate tension and tightness.
Anyway, any and all help or suggestions appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I recently did this and had the same reservations/concerns you do. I watched a few youtube videos and read a couple articles and was pleasantly surprised with the results. Granted mine are the smaller KBO mini-mags and use the synthetic cord style rope but concept is the same. The 2 key parts are the start and end of the wrap, with the finish being the hardest. Flatten/hammer the rope end so it fits under the wrap without leaving too big a bulge. On the finish, routing the rope back under the wrap, while keeping everything tensioned and clean is the hardest part. I think I used a wire big game leader I had laying around to do that. You should be able to get all the info you need from these two links:

Thank you. Glad it worked out for you. Really not feeling doing it myself...and I do a ton of this sort of stuff myself. I might just sell the oars and buy new ones before I rope the myself *♂️
