I hope I'm posting in the correct area. I've been at this fly fishing game since 1990. That's not a land mark year for most, but it it is for me. I had been throwing flies in the sierra Nevada since the 1980's, with questionable results.

But I met a man. Borne in the year 1900. He spent his career as a hardhat diver. A meek man. A strong man. Someone I was proud to call "friend", not for my accomplishments, but for his. So, before he passes on, he throws me some gear that has been stagnating in his attic, maybe 1940's / 60's, good stuff. Delta stripper flies, old (undocumented) material's, reel with spools (old stuff), and his hand tied flies.

I haven't seen anything on this site pertaining to old gear. We're all here for fun. Whatchagot? Show us your ancient stuff, 10yrs+. If not , make your case, What did the old man pass on to you ? I'm easy.

Old gear?

I have a California fishing license from 1937 that was owned by Tommy Pena who was the grandson of a guy who owned the Vaca-Pena Mexican land grant. I am sure nobody cares but I like it. His nephew gave it to me. I have a wooden yard stick that was a gas station giveaway item in 1941 in Wisconsin and has the possession and size limits for all the fish. “Wall eyed pike 7 each day, 13 inches long”. I found it in a basket of sewing stuff my wife bought at a garage sale.

Bill - my stuff is scattered, but these are close at hand.

John - I like your style. A woman friend bought a box at a garage sale. In it were 4 homemade bobbins for tying the big stuff.

Good score fo on the Pena license. I am familiar with their family history. I have a 1937 Field and Stream he most probably read.

Thank you both for your replies

Where did this cool old guy live?

That is an older Pflueger 'Medalist' because it has 6 rivets around the center of the spool where later ones had 3 rivets.

I fished, repaired and sold those old Pflueger 'Medalists' for 50 years so I have an article on them:

Here are two more good articles on Medalists online:

Bill - I enjoyed reading all the Pflueger information. Thank you

I looked up the MW sport king on ebay. I wanted to see why you weren't dazzled by it. $15. Now I know why. But, this will work out perfect. I have a 2 1/2 yr grchild who loves to cast his zebco. He thinks he's fishing with a bobber and 3 splitshot at the terminal end. The reel is coming off, and the sportking is going on.

Thanks again, Tom B

I'm not able to get back to the "old license post' but it was from John H, a Davis dude. The license he had was from 1937 Tommy Pena. I'd like to see a pic too. The Pena's are a famous Vacaville family. They're original adobe home in west V.V is scheduled for a restoration.

Love those pix of the old licenses.
Regret that I don't have any to post.
You see, the fish ate them!
Best to all.

You need to get that Perfect off the wall and onto the water! Should still fish well, and sound as sweet...

hw - you got me to thinking. It purrs when line is stripped. It's off the wall amidst a good cleaning and regrease. The original line is wasted. I will search through my stash for a complimentary full sink.
