Just got back from fishing Crowley. My dad and I fished McGee the first day (Tuesday) and got bout 8 each with few over 18 inches. Lotta short bites and boats but overall very slow. Guide boats we doing ok but didn't look wide open like previous reports.
Fished Layton Springs the next day and it was wide open. Over 50 fish between the 2 of us. More than half of them were over 18 inches with few between 4-5 lbs on the boga grip. In 20 plus years of fishing Crowley, never have seen the quality like this. Fished yesterday, half day, before we left for home and the fishing/size of fish was the same. We were all by ourselves. No boats or guide boats near us. They were fishing McGee or Green Banks/Six Bays side. Also, we were stripping, not indo fishing.

Wow....that is a wonderful report.

What line and fly would you recommend?

I missed you by a day. I did McGee on Monday with 13 to hand among a flotilla of guide boats and others. I thought I'd try Leyton on Tuesday for half a day and was one of only two boats. I thought for sure I was in an area with no fish since I was the first there. Came away with 12 but many missed too. Biggest 5+ lbs. Caught browns, cuts, rainbows and one perch.
You sound like you have it dialed in Kaiyasdad:)

My dad and I have super fat cat tubes. We were fishing uniform sink 4 most of the time as we didn't expect the fish to be so shallow. The last day I switched to uniform sink 2 and it was lot better as I didn't have to keep checking the fly for moss or other crap in the water. Was using olive bugger that I tie. Using original Jayfair materials. Shuck, marabou and hackle. Think having a fish finder really helps out. Not so much in marking fish but for the drop offs and ledges.

Good luck Bob. Might try my luck at Heenan.

I tried stripping but to no avail. I caught all mine under indicator about 12 feet deep. They all were good fighters, some doing somersaults some diving to the bottom. These fish are healthy fighters. PS this fishery for fly fishers is one of the best managed stillwaters in the state. So many big healthy fish accessible in shallow water.

Davis Lake can be good in October too?

Pretty soon many will be heading to Eagle Lake.

Looks like Fall is approaching Nor Cal......

Think Frenchman Lake should be good too. That’s where we will be going next since Pyramid Lake is not open yet.

Love to hear a report about Frenchmen. I always forget about this fishery since Davis is closer to me.
