Am I the only one who has been thinking about the Klamath? Thinking about going up in the first half of September.

I'm a poor time-starved man living in the Sac area, so I've been thinking about the American. Last year in August I started an 8-month stretch of fishing there every weekend. August had some great action.

i can't wait for this fall, already started tying flies. Will probably wait till October though and spend a few weeks up there, work permitting again. Had excellent fishing the second and third weeks of October last year, unless the fish were sort of late? It was my first time on the Klamath and first time fishing for summer runs in general.

The A can be good in August.

For the first time, we are going to add the 2.5 hours to our drive and fish the Rogue this fall. I am really looking forward to getting on a piece of water that is new to me. I have fished the Trinity extensively, the Klamath a bit, and a reasonable amount on the coast. Looking forward to it.

Middle/Upper Rogue river:

Al Perryman is my contact with the entire Rogue river and he knows it very well.

Living on the middle Rogue he starts going out after the 4th of July. He fishes almost every day at "Dark Thirty, AM" for a couple of

hours. He uses an ACR 5 weight Spey rod, Scandi head, leader the length of his rod and a #6 dark winged classic wet Steelhead fly.

I think it starts to get better in September and then October is the best month for Greased Line or Dry line fishing.

Lower Rogue river:

The lower Rogue river is good for Half-pounders in Aug/Sept with good access roads running along the rivers.

Early and late in the day is best with son on the water your enemy.

Most use a floating line, leader your rod length to 1x and a #8 wet fly or nymph.

Am I the only one who has been thinking about the Klamath? Thinking about going up in the first half of September.

Bruce Slightom was a fly fishing jet boat guide on the lower Klamath river for many decades.

He thinks mid-September is the best time to start serious trips to the lower river.

I think October is the best month to go to the middle Klamath river.

Like Terry Thomas and his group, if you can go up there 3 or 4 times a year then go in mid-August.

Chris Pasley and I were invited in August for a free day jet boat trip with Mac out of Time Flies.

Fish were active for maybe 1 or 2 hours in the early morning, then a huge break mid-day, sleeping in the sand under the willows, and

a hour bite in the evening? Not really much fishing time in August.

**I would go up there to the middle Klamath river with a travel trailer for 2 months (Sept 15-Nov 15) in the Fall if I was single.

If you could RV camp up there for the month of October, on a good year, it would change your life forever.

The A can be good in August.

As long as there is water ;)

I would love to spend a month up there and this year I plan on doing no less than 4-5 days each time I go. I will say that I won't ever go in November again. The days are too short and unless you are doing a float you can easily waste the day away in the truck going from spot to spot.

I've been thinking about my annual trip to the Klamath for half pounders too. While planning the trip, I heard that Hoopa and Yurok country are both presently closed to tourists due to covid issues. Yuroks are reporting 0 cases so it may be working.

Lower Rogue could be on the agenda instead.

You heard? What part of the river is considered Yurok country?

TahoeJoe

Yeah. My kid lives in Humbold County and he told me. So I went to the Yurok government web page and confirmed.

Weichpec down to the mouth is all Yurok Country. I think you can still fish in the estuary for salmon from a boat.

Here's the Yurok covid website:

I'm hoping the policy changes but not holding my breath.

I'm going to head up tomorrow. I've only been going there a couple seasons but it seems by the time I had gone it appeared I had missed some opportunities.

Let us know how it goes. There's fish in the Trinity, so there should be some around.

I will report good or bad.

Is the river open to jet boats or is it considered Yurok territory and as such, no access is allowed due to Covid closure?

Anyone have any link to find out water temps? The only info I’ve found was on dreamflows, which listed the temp at Orleans and Klamath Glen at 73f. I’m not surprised to see it so warm, but that info seems maybe not terribly exact? Would be nice to get a better sense of that

If that's the case it will be a short trip. Bad for fish but honestly why would they be in the river in those kind of temps? Is it possible they head up further until they feel comfortable? I'm packed so I'm going even if it's just a fact finding mission. If this week is no good then maybe the following week will be and I'm already booked for 3 nights then. Eventually I may run into a few

Best fishing intel is finding it out for yourself. You’ll always have nay sayers and the ones catching won’t say anything.

If you can go only once a year to the Klamath river I would go in October to the middle river.

For thirty years Noe Fierros went for 3-4 days, 3 times a year. Maybe Sept 1, Oct 1 and Nov 1 ?

I think that the Klamath river is my favorite Steelhead river in California.

I huge Steelhead in the Klamath river is 10 pounds and they will fight as hard as any 10 pounder anywhere.

This is the time of year that the Klamath lovers come into our shop to get some stuff and talk about that great river.

Joe Shirshac started fly fishing the Klamath river in the early 1950s. He said fish around 6 pounds were common.

Bruce Slightom, of Eureka, guided the lower Klamath river for many decades with a jet boat. He recommends starting Sept 15.

73 degrees is just too warm

I read from the Eureka newspaper two days ago that the Lower K is experience a blue algae bloom, toxic to people who have minor cuts and abrasions. Guess 73 degree water might have had something to do with that.

The Rogue is sounding better than the Klamath. On my way back from the Deschutes mid September.
