I met Joe over 50 years ago when I got my first job in the fishing tackle business.

I was going to Sacramento State College and got a part time job at Sports Unlimited on Arden Way.

Joe was in the US Navy in World War II but when we met he was a Sacramento City Fire Fighter.

Joe had more impact on my life than almost anyone, helping me with my little fly shop and taking me fishing.

He impacted thousands by taking groups to places like Alaska, Christmas Island, New Zealand, Labrador, Nova Scotia, Dean River.

Today Joe is 97 and still shuttles anglers on the lower American river that he knows so well.

Cell phone for shuttles: 916/541-9909

Andy Guibord takes Joe out for an occasional Striper hunt on the America with his jet boat.

Hi Bill, Joe shuttled me this morning and told me that you guys had lunch together yesterday. Andy was MIA. Joe is a living legend!

Definitely a legend. I hope to see 97 or even 79.. I guess fishing keeps you young, but the knees are starting to get old and I can't wade like I use to. That's one reason I limited my shad fishing. I don't want to be a statistic on the American river

Does Martis lake still exist. I fished it the first day it opened.

Its there but if you haven't been up there lately you might be in for a surprise. Sleepy town Truckee has visions of being Aspen.

Call "Mountain Hardware" in Truckee and they will tell you about Martis Creek reservoir.

Another place to call in Victor Babbitt's "Truckee River Outfitters" in Tahoe City.

Over the last 40 years is has gone through many different phases.

Billy - If a person were feeling uncomfortable at a party where they knew no one, and then met Joe, Joe would be one of the greatest gifts in their lives! Best, Bob

Joe truly loves everyone and was always taking people with him fly fishing.

Lucky you!

Having a mentor and friend like that is pure treasure.

Lost mine about 15 months back and I still find myself talking to him...okay, not out loud, but talking anyway.

I am very glad that I was recommended to call Joe for help with shuttles on the American. I have to say that sometimes the stories he would share during the shuttle ride were a highlight of the day. Always a real pleasure to spend a little time with him. He sure has seen and done a lot in his life! I’m envious of his health and longevity, and I hope he has many more good years ahead!

Bill,
I'm in my eighties and I hope I live long enough to meet Joe!
Best to all the Kiene forum members.
