Two weeks ago, we had one drop off 11 illegals just 100 yards south of us at La Jolla
Farms. 8 AM in the morning. Made some phone calls and all were apprehended;
even the panga returning to Baja.

I have had 2 wooden drift boats back when I first started guiding and was in complete love with them. Unfortunately the up keep is not fun, especially when you start guiding more than 100 days a year. If it was 50 or so days a year I would be all over the woodys, there is nothing that rows better, floats higher, tracks straighter or looks just bad ass going down the river. They say once you go wood you never go back.

Maybe the desire to build a boat is a deep gene in all of us., perhaps a little Jethro Gibbs in all of us. I still admire wood boat builders and their boats-- definitely a labor of love because it is a major commitment to time.

Every wood boat builder I have met has been very nice and loves to explain about his boat and the process- in as much detail as you want. Like a proud grandparent, today's wood boat builders tend to have lots of pictures on their cell phone- of the entire building process.

It is interesting to see the building process--- and I always start thinking "I could (should) do that".

Many, many moons ago, a HS friend and I built a "canoe" from a kit we bought from of the 4 line mail order ads in the back of Sports Afield. It was really a flat bottomed "canoe shaped" wood frame with fiberglass panels. We ran many rivers and fished in many lakes with it but it was so flimsy it needed repair after every use. Eventually it was not worth repairing anymore.
