A decent starter reel and wt fwd floating line. A friend found this in a garage. I've cleaned it up some, added some backing and cleaned and dressed the line. The line is in great shape, my 7wt casts it nicely. Added a leader butt section also.

Good to go for anyone who needs it. It's a bit old but functional.

Daiwa made the Scientific Angler System One fly reels in Japan in two sizes, 456 and 678.

They were click-n-pawl reels with a rim drag.

We sold thousands of them in the 1970s.


Daiwa made them for themselves too.

This one is the same size as the Scientific Angler System One 789.

It will take the SA 789 spools


This would be good on a rod for bass and steelhead?

I picked one of these up at the fly shop in Napa back in the mid 80’s. Along the way I’ve collected several SA spools that fit it nicely but strangely one SA 678 wouldn’t fit. Caught numerous steelhead on it. A pretty nice reel overall. I think I paid $24.99.

Thanks to Ed this reel is now in service by a Sacramento area native in North Georgia. Here it is on duty on the Chattahoochee River tailwater in the Atlanta metro area along with a picture of the river here.

What species of fish are you after on the Chatt? Looks like smallmouth water.

Hey Larry,
The Chattahoochee tailwater section comes from a bottom-draw dam on Lake Lanier, so it is cold year around (~50s). The main fish species are stocked and holdover rainbows, and wild browns (browns are no longer stocked regularly but do reproduce here). The dam was built in the 1950s; trout stocking started in the 1960s. Cold-water conditions exist for 30+ miles below the dam. Before that time this probably was smallmouth water.

Good to see that classic blue collar reel in action, and on a classic rod too. FWIW, I've fished the Chattahoochee just a couple miles below the dam after work. Keeping with the classic theme, I was using a Granger Aristocrat 8642 and a Pfleuger 1494.
