Perfect timing.

A couple of days ago was my 72 birthday and my wife let me get a new GARMIN Echomap 70 series fishfinder. Geez, what a machine this Garmin is. It's taken a couple days to get the old unit out and I've just started to hook up the new one. Maybe today I'll get it HOT and take it down to the river.

This video really is good and kind of makes sense even though it is a different brand he's using. I looked at all the manuals that came with the unit and it'll take a week to read everything and another month to try and get all the whistles and bells on this new machine to work for me.

I have run side imaging for sturgeon fishing and it was a very good tool for fishing the shallows. Many times we could find fish in 10-15 ft of water during big tides that would have spooked if we ran over them.

I currently have a CHIRP unit on my boat. When I fish lakes, the ability to read the water is nuts- I can tell kokanee from trout, bass from kings. The ability to discern bait balls from structure is amazing.

Shallow water, (<25 ft or so), I don't really use it much except to find structure- points, ledges breaks, mud versus rock, all help in the delta for striper.


The sad part is that the electronics, in fact, all the tools for fishing are getting better and better every year, but the numbers and size of the the fish are getting small and smaller. Kind of makes me feel bad for the fish.

Hey Tony, I found that the for the most part, leaving the unit in full auto does very well- you can use it like that for a while before you ever have to tweak settings.
