Another week........another Pyramid fishing adventure !!!!

Well, I didn't over-sleep this morning. :rolleyes::rolleyes:
The alarm went off at 4:45, downed LOTS of coffee, and was on the road at 6:15.

My auto-pilot guided me to "that southern beach I like to frequent". :D:D

First thing upon arrival, I watched a fellow land an easy 10lb plus fish.:cool:

I suited up and was on the water at 7:45 joining the other 5 fishermen on the beach.
It was a beautiful sunny day at the lake too.
There was a light south wind in the morning switching to a moderate northerly wind around 11:00.

There was a smattering of cars at Sandhole and Indian Head in the morning and they all disappeared by 1:00.

The morning chatter on the beach was "shoulda' been here yesterday, the fishing was really good".
Yeah, yeah, yeah.................blah, blah, blah...........................been there, heard it before...........:mad:

So, started off 'catoring for a little while, with ZERO results, then switched to the stripping rig.

Well, today was the day of the beetle.
I fished the white over chartreuse version as a dropper with a tui-chub clouser point fly today and went 4 for 8 on that set-up.

I had one strike in the late afternoon on the 'cator with a balanced leech.
So, my total for the day was 4 for 9 and all 4 landed were "rats".:rolleyes:

Most of my grabs and hookups were between 11:00 till 2:00.
Hummmmmmmm.................. afternoon bite.............that's not suppose to happen.:confused:

Now, the fellow that landed the 10lb plus fish asked me what I was using this afternoon, I showed him, and he went with a white over white popcorn beetle.

Shortly afterwards he asked me for some help netting another big one for him.
Sure enough, this fish was even larger than the one he landed this morning.
The general consensuses (from the small crowd that had gathered) was that this fish would easily go over 15lbs.:cool: AND it took the white over white beetle.:eek:

So, I fished till 6:30, purposely, to avoid the evening commute traffic through Reno. ;);)

I packed up and left the lake right at 7:00 and enjoyed a small thermos of Cream of Potato soup on the way home.:cool:

I'll give it another shot next week !!!!!!

Thanks Bob......great report/post....

What did those 10 and 15 pounder look like?

The fish I remember seemed to be darker with some orange?

Pictures of these new "old strain fish" looked like ocean salmon?

Bill,

Yep, they were VERY bright, silvery/no colors, clean, and looked very similar to an ocean salmon.
As a matter of fact, while netting his last/largest I jokingly told him, "That's a salmon". :D:D

So Bill,

Any chance we could convince you to make the trip over the hill for a chance at "one of those new old fish" ????? ;);)

That is..........when you're done wearing flip flops and shorts. :p:p

I'd enjoy catching up to you at the lake and be able to shake your hand in person.:cool:

Hey Mr T,

Yep, gettin' up there soon..............................

A couple of things to note.......................

We're almost in the "New Moon" cycle right now.
The Reno Fly Shop report had some information about the lake turning over and the fishing improving.

While fishing on Wednesday, I did in fact see that the algae (associated with the lake turn over) had for the most part, disappeared.

Those two things combined "should" turn the fish on.........maybe...........:confused:

I may have to do a couple of days of fishing next week just cause' I have that gut feeling that..................... ;);)

Bob thanks for the great reports.

Do you fish from shore using ladders, are those necessary ? Not sure I'd find it very comfortable.

Steve,

Myself, I don't use a ladder.
I just wade the shore at the medium deep to deep beaches.
I use 5mm neoprene waders, 2 pair of thermal socks, fleece pants over thermal pants and that works well for me.
I seldom wade up to and over my waist and (especially if I'm using a stripping basket) only wade up to my crotch.

Stripping baskets become very ineffective when they're underwater. ;);)

The "custom ladders" that the hardcores at the lake use are very nice though.
Molded seats, cup holders, padding in the right places, wheels, etc.

So, you don't have to have a ladder to fish the lake.
Just choose a beach where you can get your offering out to where the fish should be.

Are you planning a Pyramid trip ???

Bob

Thanks for the info.

Yes have never fished it and typically enjoy lake fishing - it's probably more popular in Scotland than rivers.

So plan to get up there for couple days before Dec (work permitting).

Looks like a lovely place and keen to give it a go.

Keep your reports coming :)

You're welcome Qp. :cool::cool:

Looks like we're going to miss each other by a day.

I'm rounding up my gear for a trip tomorrow.

It's going to be a cold beotch too.
Right now @ 6:00 p.m. it's 37 degrees here in Carson City and dropping fast.
I'm betting that tomorrow morning it'll be 8-12 degrees when I start stirring about.:eek:

Be careful out there in your tube and give us a report. :D:D

My report to follow tomorrow night.
