Yuba - flows and fishing

Thinking about hitting the Y Friday evening. Years ago this was a great time to catch the evening blizzard caddis hatch but have not been for many years.

Any intel on flows/fishability/hatches would be greatly appreciated.

I fished it a couple of weeks ago, and flows are now down to 2500 cfs, about 1000 cfs less than 2 weeks ago. These current flows are high but fishable. I would not expect to see a caddis hatch of much with these high flows. There were very few bugs flying around a couple of weeks ago, and the rocks did not have a lot of caddis larvae on them. Of course, I was long gone by the time the evening hit.

I was thinking of heading up Sat. Has anyone been up @1500 cfs?

1500 is perfect but the gauge still shows 2500

Hopper fishing has supposedly been decent

I went up there Wednesday afternoon. Fished for 4 hours using hopper patterns, Goddard caddis, then tried nymphing with rubberlegs, bead head prince, green caddis larvae. No bumps. Saw one stonefly ovipositing on the water. Lots of rock snot in the shallows. Water is clear, cold and high. Wade carefully. Hope you have better luck than I.

fishing valley rivers in the afternoon is usually not so productive. Especially with all this heat. I used to try and fish the Yuba around this time a few years ago in the summer evenings but it seems it hasn't cooled off in the evenings as usual. Time to move north or up in the mountains. Think like a fish... Get up early

Wait . . . Chris . . . I remember when early for you was 10:30 am?! You must have changed your ways!!! I agree, if I choose to fish the Yuba during the day at this time of year, my expectations are pretty low.

Thanks for the feedback. We ended up fishing the Big T. The conditions were perfect but man that was alot of slogging for a few small trout. We tried every nymph and nymphing technique in the book only to get a few bumps in about 12 hours on the river.
