All,

Looking to get out this week with two of my boys (age 7 and 4) and looking for recommendations on any areas that would produce action to keep them interested for an hour or two? Size is of no concern, bluegills and small bass would be a fun time. When i fish its usually out of B&W or Wimpys but wanted to see if there were any harbors that allowed fishing which might produce more immediate action? Or should i just target bass in the usual spots and hope for a productive morning with a few takes on top?

I took my oldest out to Miller Park Harbor last year at first light and the fishing was great and he had a great time however it turns out the harbor doesn't allow boats to fish in here despite the navigable waterway... total bummer as it was perfect with several bass and blue gills hitting little poppers on a fly rod. Anything similar to this around without being pushed out?

Plan on taking the 7 year old on the american for stripers as he has more patience but really want to get the 4 year old some fish as he loves casting and want to keep it positive.

Thanks for any help or assistance provided.

Almost any marina that has slack water and shade will have small Bass, Bluegill & Crappie. The problem is access. If you know someone that has a boat anchored in a marina or can get permission to fish off the docks, Korth's Pirates Lair has good warm water fishing. If you're traveling west along Hwy 12, just before going to Tower Park Marina is a turnoff on the right that goes to a park on the Mokelumne where there is a basin, apparently dredged out with a dock and pier to fish from. This pond is open to the public for a small fee and is connected to the Mokelumne. So, there should be Bass, Stripers and Sunnies available. There's no launching there, so, the docks are almost never occupied.

Be careful not to trespass in that area. landlords can be testy....

The above seems to be a description of the Westgate Landing Regional Park.

It is on my list, as a possible place to launch and fish from a canoe. But, I am not sure how heavy the ski-boat traffic is be in the area.

Ski Boat traffic is certainly concerning in that area but on the times that I've been there, there were no boats at all inside the park. But, you never know.... Ski boat traffic is always heavy during the summer months.

Out of B&W run up Georgiana to Oxbow Marina. Turn right once you inside and go all the way in the back. The are scads of sunfish. Even a fair number of crappie.

Thanks guys. We hit up snug harbor west of hog back but fishing in there was terrible to my surprise. Ended up hitting the rock walls and had good action on small bass. My son had a ton of fun and did really well. Think he’s ready to hit B&w next.
