Upper Sac/McCloud report

Got away Friday at 2:30 and pulled off on the Upper Sac below Dunsmuir around 5:00...fished til 7:30 or so and hooked a dozen. Fish were receptive to ESN techniques with heavy flies. Heavy being the operative word — double tungsten beads and some extra putty for insurance. Not many fishable spots at those flows but the fish are stacked in the holding water if you can get down to them.

Went into the conservancy on Saturday morning. Worked pretty hard for not that many grabs. Rose one nice fish on a chubby chernobyl otherwise all ESN again. The road into AhDiNa isn’t any worse this year than years past.

Hit the Upper Sac again later in the day and stuck a few more fish there. Enjoyed the hockey game with takeout pizza and a six pack before bed and was home today before noon.

We had a cabin in Dunsmuir for about 10 years and have fished it for many years.

It is a great freestone stream that has many springs running into it.

Thanks for the report. Great to see someone get off the couch! I decided now was a good time to get that knee surgery I had on the planner. Now I'll be ready in 5 weeks when the really good ( I hope) fishing begins. Does not look like I will miss much, especially that old sore knee I had.

what are ESN techniques?

European Style Nymphing or Euro Nymphing. There are variations but it is essentially fishing very heavy nymphs with no indicator and no other weighs with the bottom or anchor fly being heaviest to get to the bottom as fast as possible. Fished in a tight line manner generally with long rods (10' to 11' 3wt) Lots of videos on Youtube.

Similar to short line nymphing done on the Upper Sac by Ted Towendolly/Ted Fay.

My preferred ESN rig for the Upper is a double tung bead stone as an anchor and either a brown caddis or olive perdigon up top. This weekend 80% of the fish came on the stone including all the bigger ones.
