Evening.
I was shooting line out my float tube at a lake on the opener Saturday, and as I was stripping retrieving my running line and strip setting, I noticed that on the especially hard / fast strip sets, I was creating enough friction to melt the outer covering if my running line to my finger guard. Now I've been primarally using my shooting head set up on beach and occasionally on the tube for stripers, but I don't feel like I've ever noticed this or enough to give it a second thought. Now my running line has a bunch of rough spots over its length.
Any thoughts or similar experiences?
(I'm going to check my bench reel 8wt and see if I gave similar burns on the running line)
Air flow running line set up on a 6wt. Fishing fresh water. Water temp 58-62*.

I fished a lot of salt water/big game fly fishing and only once so far did I feel I needed a stripping glove.

It was for Peacock Bass in the Brazilian Amazon.

On a 9 weight rod we had to stop them before they went into the trees and roots.

For trout fishing most people are using full lines.

Maybe we could blame it on the finger guards?

Any ideas?

If it’s an AirFlo Ridge running line the coating will eventually slip. That’s the line I use the most and have send them back for a replacement. I’ve sent so many back that they told me to go to a local shop and purchase a new one. The newer lines seem to last a little longer.

I've had similar experience as Jeff with Airflo running lines.

Thanks for the responses, if I an interpreting the responses correctly what I am experiancing is a condition of old running line that has delaminated and when I strip / strip set hard the outer lining of the line is moving independent of the lines core and creating additional friction and heat from the inside out.
I will replace but would it be worth sending to air flow?

Thanks again.

ICE,.... It's always worth a try to return a worn or broken item. If the manufacturer doesn't come through, what've you lost?? You may just get a replacement like Jeff did.
