The Scientific Anglers SA 1 456 has long been the bombproof, workhorse fly reel for trout and bass. The click pawl drag is in great shape with no apparent wear, and adjusts easily to your conditions. Aside from a little reel rash (nothing structural or mechanical) as shown on the photos, this reel is in great shape.

At one time this was the best selling fly reel in America......I still have some.

They were made by Diawa in Japan for Scientific Angler/3M.

They came in 2 sizes: '456' and '789'.

At the end of their production some were made in South Korea and had problems.

Today some of the best value reels are made in South Korea.

We caught tons of Bonefish at Christmas Island, medium Tarpon in Belize and big Steelhead on the Dean River with them.

Every decade or so there is a 'go to' high value fly reel.

Some were the Pflueger Medalist, Cortland Crown, SA System One, Orvis Battenkill.....etc.
