Or become a year round professional fly fishing guide?

Some of the guys who grew up at my shop went into the guiding lifestyle, full time.

Not a job for everyone and pretty hard on the family life.

Fred Gordon, Mike McCune, Craig Ziegler are some that come to mind.

My "son" Galen Geller never had a real job but had a degree in Econometrics.

He moved up to Seaside, Oregon and tied flies for some Alaskan lodges, Oregon locals and Kiene's Fly Shop.

He had a wonderful life mostly in that lovely little seaside town over from Portland, Oregon.

Galen raked cockles on near by Oregon beaches then went home and made Clam Linguine.

Fred Gordon grew up next door to my grandparents in South Sacramento.

He spent part of his life as a ceramic art teacher in Sacramento.

Then move to Dunsmuir, California to fish and do his ceramic art.

He is now considered to be one of the most legendary guides in Nor Cal.

He guides on the Upper Sac, McCloud and Lower Sacramento Rivers in the spring, summer and fall.

Fred spends his winters in the Bahamas and New Zealand traveling with Mark Merril.

Mike McCune went to Seaside, Oregon to partner up years ago with Craig Ziegler to guide in Alaska.

The rest of the year Mike would be guiding Steelhead in Oregon and duck hunting in Nor Cal.

I went into the fishing tackle business 50 years ago so that is not a bad way to go.
