There was a very good report on the Bob Simms Show on KFBK 1530 AM radio this morning

Bob called the fly shop in Chester for a report fro the Almanor Fly Fishing Company

http://www.almanorflyfishing.com/

They said the hatch start a few days ago.

They recommended going out about 6:00 pm starting with a fast sinking full line and a Hex nymph get deep.

Then later go to a slower sinking line and a nymph.

Near sunset go to a floating line and nymph and later to a cripple / dry.

They said lots of smaller fish near the dam but large fish as you head up the West shore.

Lincoln ans Lance Gray are up there now for about a month guiding on the Hex.

We are getting a nice hex hatch up here at Lake Siskiyou by Mt. Shasta. In the last week, I have fished it 4 nights. The winds were hi the other two nights. We are getting a lot of smallmouth, and occasional brown and bow. These are the first good hatches in a few years. IMHO, when they draw the lake down in the fall, and they expose the silted shallows where the larvae like to burrow, I think they die from the heated soil. Last year was the first in many years the lake got some early fall rains and the lake levels stayed up high enough for the larvae to survive. Again, I am not baseing this on any science, just my observations from previous seasons. It has been a blast so far, going again tonight

Headed up that way next week to fish the Upper Sac and McCloud and would be interested to hear more about this fishery. I assume Ted Fay would be able to share some intel on access points and locations? Is a boat or float tube needed, or can some points be accessed from wading/shore?

Bob is always helpful at the Ted Fay Flyshop, I would be happy to help you out if you want to fish the hex. Bring a type 2 or 3 to dredge with a hex nymphs prior to the adults popping. Send me a pm with your phone number and we can chat.
Brings some poppers also. We fish them earlier then the hex, lots of fun.

Was up for 4 nights this week. First time. Really enjoyed it.
Did 1 day tour with Lance, learned a lot and landed some really good fish. Was often a short burst of action but so very sweet...those fish are epic.
Met lots of awesome people on Lance's trip and on the water up there. Can't wait for next year !
