Hey boys and girls. Here's a short report on what's been happening in our world of fishing the past week or so. Please feel free to reach out if you're planning a trip up and want any more information. We're always happy to help point you in the right direction.
Lower Sacramento River - The “Lower Sac” has recently come up to 9.5k cubes. We can expect the flows to stay around 10k for most of the summer. The past week has been good to very good fishing on the big tailwater. Typically during flows increases, we’ll see the fish turn off a bit but this hasn’t seemed to be the case over the past few weeks. Late morning and afternoon hatches of PMDs and Caddis have been the driving force turning the fish “on”. We will expect to see more and more of the big Hydropsyche Caddis hatches as the warmer days of summer creep in. The opportunity to throw the dry fly becomes great once these hatches really start to take off in June. Because of the plethora of food that’s been available to these fish over the past few months, our trout are in phenomenal shape. We’ve seen backing fly off the reel a few times this week.. We’re looking forward to a stellar summer here.
Upper Sac - The Upper Sac is in prime condition for Spring fishing. Flows are ideal and there’s been a smorgasbord of bugs flying around. This is our favorite time of the year to cover a lot of water with a dry dropper rig. The more pockets you can pick through and cover - the more opportunities you will get. You can get a lot of fish looking up with the presence of Salmonflies, Goldens, Sallies and Caddis.
Hat Creek - We’ve had some really fun days of head hunting with dry flies on Hat Creek the past couple of weeks. You can expect to find fish feeding on top during the late morning hatches and sporadically throughout the day. The cloudy days will get Green Drakes poppin’ which can provide for some extremely good dry fly sessions and can also bring some of the bigger fish of the river out from their hiding spots. As these Spring Creek fish can be picky and fickle, you need to bring your “A game” here to find success.
