Aloha, just got back from CI. Went with a group of friends and stayed at Sunset Beach, moved from Crystal Beach. It was closer to the boats and the beach was nice. The accommodations were spartan but nice, we had warm showers and AC. Biita and the guides were great. We brought some of our own food, steaks and chicken to enhance the meals. The bones were a little finicky and offshore was slow. I did get a 60lb Ono on a spin rod. Jigging was awesome, lots of snappers and toothy critters. One guy in our group got a 12 lb bonefish, largest I have seen there. I will post a pic when I get a copy. Lots of fun and a wonderful trip, Mems.

Sorry every time I try to post images they are huge.

So Bita and all the guides left Crystal Beach.
I'm leaving in the morning for Baja. A hot bite going along with some big sardina's.
Since I can figure out how to post to this web site, I'll be doing some on my FB page.
I'll send you some via email.
How's the eruption doing? Anywhere close to your house

How many "lodges' do they have now? Seems like there's a new one opening up all the time. Used to have one now there must be at least 5. Hope the fishery isn't getting too much pressure. Want to do CI (mostly as an excuse to have to go to Hawaii) but I am getting serious concerns with the pressure. Maybe its still no issue but ....

Hi Don,

The lodge you refer to, is that called the Sunset Horizon lodge ? I went to their website and it looks fine if the prices are cheaper and you're using the same guides. A bit spartan but it looks clean. It also mentions they have a restaurant on site but you mentioned you brought some of your own food. It sounds like they don't offer an all-inclusive type package. I don'y go to these places to be wined & dined, I come to fish.

As for posting pictures, here's a link from the board. http://www.kiene.com/forums/showthread.php?41135-Help-with-Uploading-Pic-s&highlight=posting+pictures

I've never had a problem with pictures as long as my wife sizes them down and does the posting for me :)

I will try to resize the pics on Monday back at school. Bitta and the guides are at Sunset right now. They won't work for Anita. The lodge is fine, and they do serve all the meals as best as they can, the sandwiches were better this year. We just brought steaks and chicken and made tortilla wraps for lunch. It was our choice. Michael has a court case with anita and if he wins he will get ownership of Crystal beach, so then they will decide what to do. there is no bar at sunset, but we brought our own liquor. it is closer to the boats, so I really didn't care. the rooms are fine. The fishing is more challenging, but the bones still eat and the Gt's will hammer you if you get it infront of them.
Earthquakes have been pretty wild, we evacuated school on friday. My home is fine, some stuff knocked off the shelves, but no real damage. The eruption is along the rift zone below volcanoes national park. It is going to be a mess for them for a while. Life on a living volcano. Jay have a blast down in baja. I will e-mail you, doug and I want to book for next year.
I will get some pictures up next week, some pretty swesome shots. Mems.

Christmas Island should be on every fly fisher's Bucket List.

The casting for Bonefish is not that far so you don't have to be a world class fly caster.

You do need to be able to cast a tight loop to get through the wind.

The casting for Trevally would be more challenging though.

I think I got the photo thing solved. The bones liked small 08 flies.

I heard the natives had netted them up to around 20 pounds in the past.

I have a slide somewhere of Kim Egdorf in a Bikini at Christmas Island with a 13 pounder that looks like 13 pounds.

We would see pairs of really big Bonefish years ago at Christmas just over the side of the flats swimming along in maybe 10 feet of water.

Bigger Bonefish don't seem to get up into shallow water much.

dynaflow,.... If you follow the series of threads down to "more ci pics", the first photo is of the 12 pound Bonefish.
