Who takes a 4x4 into the back country or high country for camping and fly fishing?

I end up using a 4X4 for work a lot and need to get back to some beautiful corners of the Sierra. And sometimes at the end of the day I wonder how a fly rod ended up in the work truck. And well, since I'm there and I have a rod with me...time for a little after work fishing! :)

Sometimes I do but mostly use the fire roads which only sometimes require four wheel drive. But in the winter I have back back on some of them and had to go up and down hills that had some snowmelt that re-froze and converted the hills to ice which can be tricky. Occasional deep snow can be an issue sometimes even on some trails in to June. Ninety percent of the trail is rock and mud but then you get to a shady area and a large snow drift. Best to carry a shovel and a high lift jack just in case.

Fabulous, Billy!

My first vehicle when I turned 16 was a 1947 Willy’s civilian Jeep...I was in love...

Best, Bob

Since 2005 we're on our third 4 Wheel Pop Up Camper. Made right here in Woodland and recognized the world wide as best in its class. 4 Wheel says it all, rarely to be found in any gubment approved "camp" ground.

Many of our customers have the 4 Wheel pop-up camper.

I think it is one of the best setups.....

I do. Mostly into the High Lakes OHV area where having a 2.5" lift w/a 1.25" body lift is pretty much a minimum (my Jeep), but only for the "Staircase" and the "Drop off". The rest can be a little sketchy without a 4 X 4 but doable in a "stock" 4wd truck. Now if you want to try and get into Morris Lake, you better be serious.

This isn't even bad.

Thanks wineslob.....

We had an old friend who had a small boat on top of his Jeep CJ5 that he took into some high lakes and did very well.

I have a VW air cooled dune buggy but am very close to buying a CJ5.

Maybe some day we can have a summer 4x4 high country camping/fishing/float tubing trip through the message board where people

only need a 4x4 SUV or Pickup to get back in somewhere to a good fly fishing lake?

What Jeep do you have?

Anyone else have a Jeep or off road 4x4?

I've got a 95 Wrangler with mentioned lift(s) 33" tires, a Terra Low 4:1 conversion in the transfer case (I found out the hard way how much you need one) and an Aussie Locker in the rear end. My wife swears I love it more than her. :D
I recently finished building a high clearance trailer out of a late 20's to early 30's Dodge truck bed. It's got the 30" tires and rims that came on the Jeep when I bought it so I can haul more stuff than the Jeep can hold.
