Casting demonstrations by experts, seminars and fly tiers are important reasons to attend the Fly Fishing Show, but after all is said and done, the number one reason continues to be the availability to see, touch and test new products, according to a survey of 2018 show attendees.

“Ticket buyers at each of the seven 2018 locations filled out brief electronic questionnaires and while there were slight differences at each venue, overall results were nearly identical,” said Fly Fishing Show president and CEO Ben Furimsky.

Prime motivation for visiting shows was:

. 45% see new tackle, gear, and accessories;
. 31% had plans to buy something specific;
. 22% buy fly-tying materials; and
. 19% plan a vacation or trip.

Other reasons given for attending included seeing and speaking with a specific personality, buying books to have them signed by authors, attending seminars or Destination Theater programs or to “just see what this fly fishing thing is all about.” According to Furimsky, 37% of all admission ticket purchases were by first-time attendees.

Overall attendance figures remained high in the face of weather challenges and other conditions with a total of 47,700 admission tickets sold. That number excludes exhibitors, volunteers, staff, fly tiers and media.

The Fly Fishing Show continues to attract high income attendees, with 33% reporting $125,000 or more annually, 17% $100,000 to $124,999, 17% $70,000 to $99,999, 13% $50,000 to $69,999, and 16% under $50,000.

Male ticket buyers accounted for 84% of all attendees with 80% homeowners instead of renters.
